I've been thinking a lot about the role of art and literature in times like now. We've seen a wave of creative responses to the coronovirus pandemic and lockdown and it feels right that creative people should want to document these events and the thoughts and feelings that arise from them. But I think creativity has a bigger role than that.

Many in the arts and creative industries were already familiar with precarity, pre-Covid-19. It's next-level now; we're all in the same liminal space as we try to second guess when lockdown will end. What will be resumed and what won't?

While people in other sectors rush to see what is Zoom-able, we wonder where we're going next. Work may never be the same again. The one thing we can do is marshal our resources, take stock and tentatively put our best foot forward.

We are suddenly less geographically tied to where we used to work. Living in Thanet has, until now, meant a long commute for many, but now we’re experiencing the freedom and drawbacks of working from home.

Margate Bookie festival, which ran from 23 to 26 November to coincide with the Turner Prize at Margate's Turner Contemporary, was our biggest and best Bookie yet. Of course it had the headline authors Alison Weir, Louis de Bernieres and Mark Billingham as well as Bookie favourites Vanessa King, Elise Valmorbida and Richard Skinned. Plus, it had the incredible Inua Ellams and local slam champions battling it out for the Bookie Slam belt. The real magic, though, was not about headliners or book sales.

There's a certain joy many of us get from being around books. With so much of our lives now online, the experience of picking up a physical book and entering into someone else's world is immensely satisfying.

So when Francesca Wilkins told me she'd found a home for The Margate Bookshop - a bookshop that had existed in online and pop-up form until now - I couldn't have been more excited.

In the heart of Margate's Old Town, the new Margate Bookshop opened last month and it is a beautiful space full of books that delight customers from Thanet and further afield.
