Making room for writers in Margate

Making room for writers in Margate

27 Nov 2023

Co-relate has joined forces with Kent Poetry and HKD to launch the first dedicated hub of studio space for writers in Margate. With funding from Arts Council England, the Writers’ Room brings together writers and members of the wider creative community, providing much-needed subsidised workspace and peer support for anyone working with words. We want to support the local literary ecosystem to grow alongside Margate’s vibrant art scene.

The Writers’ Room, is housed in Marine Studios which has a vibrant view out onto Margate Sands and was Margate’s first co-working space. The Writers’ Room is being launched at Marine Studios’ First Friday event on 1 December with the theme of Journeys. The evening will feature Travis Elborough, author of The Writers’ Journey, alongside local writers and artists.

The space provides a home to a mix of local literary organisations, writers and creatives, alongside Marine Studios’ offer of fixed desk spaces for creatives and a meeting room with enviable views of Margate Sands. Among its first residents are Margate Bookie lit fest and Babeslam founder Ellie Ward.

We seek to be a hub for writers of all backgrounds and means and we’re looking for a studio assistant to join the team by helping to run the space. It offers desks for low-income writers, who may not otherwise be able access to a regular workspace, and provides an antidote to the often isolating experience of being a writer.

Writers can also access development and support, including prose and poetry critique groups and accountability groups. They have the opportunity to attend talks by and network with industry professionals and have access to bookable meeting rooms and peer support.

If you’d like to get involved in any aspect of what we’re doing with the Writer’s Room, go ahead and get in touch with [email protected]. You can see a full press release here.
